Guest 2.4children Posted October 13, 2005 Report Posted October 13, 2005 Need a new set of front tyres. Fitted with Dunlop 2000 reinforced. Is this the best tyre for the job or are there any (cheaper) alternatives ? Quote
johnb80 Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 I'm also approaching new tyre time on the front (20,000 miles), I hate the tyre noise, whats the quietest tyres to fit ? Regards - John Quote
gazza007 Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Always used Conti CH90's managed about 27k off last fronts, good grip & low noise. Quote
Andrew T Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 I understood that one reason for tyres transmitting a lot of road noise is that UK road surfaces are much coarser than those in Europe where Continental, Uniroyal etc are developed. Avon used to be the only tyres developed in the UK, perhaps they would be quieter? Ivor recently bought some Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 :P Worn in a bit now, and am still impressed with them. Quote
Guest chrisH Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 I use firestone on the Gal, always have, wear rate is very good on front (now that the trackings been done)Havent got a mileage figure though. cheerschris Quote
tim-spam Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Continentals - traction much better too. Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 Not wishing to Hi-jack this thread but I have an issue with Dunlop tyres, that is to say if you inflate the tyres to the pressures shown in the door post label then they are within 3psi of the maximum pressure allowed by the marking on the tyre wall. The tyres are marked as a maximum pressure of 51psi and the pressure label in the vehicle states running pressures of 48 in the front and 44 in the rear, any comments ? Quote
Guest blatters Posted October 14, 2005 Report Posted October 14, 2005 At 28,000 miles changed the first set of front tyres from Dunlop Sport 2000 to Bridgestone Turanza ER30's. They got a good write up in the online reviews, are used on the Lexus, Porche Cayenne and other tourers. The emphasis was on quiet cruising and the tests showed them to be alot quieter than the Dunlops. I think the site is Black Circles and they have links to loads of test sites. I'm now at 42,000 miles and the Bridgestones still have loads of life in them. Are they quieter? So difficult to tell. I think so but the difference is surely marginal because I wonder if I'm deluding myself! But then the rears are still the original Dunlops (I know, I should move the older set from the back to the front but my Michellin employee friend only told me that after the Bridgestones had been fitted, and I wanted the 'quiet runners' on the front anyway for my test). I'd do a bit of research and choose what you think is best. Always get the reinforced extra load tyres because of the Galaxy's weight. And I don't think run-flats are a good idea because the Galaxy doesn't have auto-pressure sensors on the dashboard - there are stories of folk running for miles and miles on run flats because they did not realise they had a puncture. The side walls are so strong you see - they also are said to impair your ride because they're so rigid too. Blatters Quote
iainkirk Posted October 25, 2005 Report Posted October 25, 2005 I've just put some 'Tornado Alpha' tyres on my Gal. Quote

Tyre noise after 2 days and 300 miles seems to be on the low side compared to the Pirellis I had on the Gal.. Mike Quote

wytonpjs Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 OK you guys - for those of us on limited budgets with 215/55 R16 tyres fitted, are there ANY reasonably cheap tyres out there? Best quotes that I have at present is a "budget" tyre at Quote
greg_68 Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 Check out etyres they seem fairly cheap and come to your house. A friend had them out for his Jag last week and was well pleased, saved himself Quote
GSMGuy Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 Etyres were well the cheapest, just got 4 fitted to my new car before delivery, the stealer was pulling his hair out, because of acrtually getting them, and the cost... They are 275/55/17V He was getting quoted Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted November 7, 2005 Report Posted November 7, 2005 Hi All, I was told that car should have reinforced tyres but could have the next rated tyre up instead. Wos this about then? Anyone know what the insurance angle is? Oggy. Quote

Porkstone Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 My TDI Galaxy has Michlen Pilot 215/55 ZR16 97W MXM's fitted and needs two new front tyres. I went to a local shop that can supply exact replacements for Quote
Steven.Langdale Posted December 7, 2005 Report Posted December 7, 2005 Porkstone What does the handbook state the required tyres are? Just looked at my Gal an the current tyres are H's. I'd go with the H's but check the handbook - you don't want an accident and the insurance not paying out because you had the wrong tyres. You never know with these insurance companies! Don't know about you current tyres, but I get on well with Continentals, god knows what they cost at the moment though! Steven Quote
Porkstone Posted December 8, 2005 Report Posted December 8, 2005 Hi Steven, What sort of mileage do you get out of a set of fronts ? Cheers, P Quote
